Oh goodness, if you had told me 5 years ago that we would eventually get to photograph couples all over the world, I would have been incredulous…and then secretly wished that “all over the world” hopefully included Scotland. Traveling is such a passion of ours, and when we announced last autumn that we would be exploring the UK for five weeks and wanted to photograph some couples while we there, we got an email from the sweetest girl named Sabrina. Sabrina is an American who met an Englishman named Sam while she was studying abroad at St. Andrews University. They were just friends at first, but even after Sabrina went back home, their friendship kept evolving. It eventually turned into full-fledged, albeit long-distance courtship. Happily, they now both live in the UK, with Sam finishing up his M.A. in Biblical Studies at St. Mary’s (one of the colleges at St. Andrews) and Sabrina working on her M.A. in Creative Writing at an English university.

We arranged to meet on a Sunday afternoon in early November to take photos at Sam’s college and then explore a bit of St. Andrews with them. It was like entering the world of Harry Potter. I wouldn’t have been surprised if we had seen Hermione rush by us with an absurdly tall stack of books while Harry zoomed around overhead on his broomstick. (I also got a bit giddy because this was where Will & Kate met and fell in love.)

It was the most enchanting evening as we strolled around the grounds, with Sam expertly recounting the history of the area and even more expertly gazing at Sabrina with utmost adoration and love. We wish we could move over there and be best friends with these two. We’re so excited for them and their beautiful future.

This is the first post in a two-post series of their engagement photographs. Part Two will be published tomorrow and is set against the backdrop of St. Andrew’s Castle on the coast along the North Sea. Be sure to check back then to see more!
